The Police Have Boner Comparing Software?

Virginia is clearly not for lovers if they’re still teens. The Washington Post reports that the Manassas, Virginia police are trying to get a 17-year-old boy to get his penis erect on camera so that they compare it that in a video sent to a 15-year-old girl. The girls mother found it and now her daughter’s boyfriend is facing child porn charges. If he is convicted, he would be imprisoned until he is 21 and be a registered sex offender.

The police have already taken pictures of the young man’s penis, feel they need the boner shot to truly make their case. They might be using this as a tactic to get the teen to plead guilty, since the teen’s lawyer was told that if he did plead guilty,

Sanctity of Marriage — Old News Division

Marriage. No joke.
I wasn't able to turn up the New York Sun article that the Washington Evening Star claimed to be reprinting, so all I have to go on is the cautionary tale titled, "Mock Marriages are not Funny." Well, I suppose they could be. But it must be taken as the official position of the Evening Star that you take absolutely no merriment in the following account.

The article describes what transpired as a "mixed marriage," and we all know what that means, don't we? Well, I thought we did. When I searched the term, my first hit was the Wikipedia entry on interracial marriage.

Police Raid Esperanto Lessons! Esperanto a Front for Gambling

The Washington Evening Star reported on July 7, 1907 a June 27 police raid of an organization with the name of “The Republican Association of the Metropolis and the Colonies.” They were gathered on the Boulevard Clichy, in the Pigalle district, for the uplifting purpose of learning Esperanto. The Pigalle had been an artists quarter, but had become even seedier.

I'm not sure when the area became notorious for prostitution, but if that wasn't the case in 1907, it probably wasn't far away. For that matter, I've stayed in a hotel in the (completely upscale and non-seedy) Fourth Arrondissement that, reportedly, was a bordello until the early 1960s (not bad for a building built into a wall of a church).

The police found out that the Esperanto lessons were just a front for an unlicensed gambling parlor. Judging from the Evening Star, the popularity of the place was the giveaway. What? Esperanto lessons can’t be popular?

Anarchist, Free-Love Supporting Lawyer Defends Esperanto

An a proponent of
civil rights, too!
On July 4, 1913, The New-York Tribune ran a piece on languages spoken in New York by one R.L.H. On July 6, the paper ran a rebutal of sorts by James F. Morton, Jr., the Councillor for New York for the Esperanto Association of North America. Before you think of some mousy language enthusiast, James F. Morton was an opponent of censorship and a proponent of free love and safe birth control. He was close friends with H. P. Lovecraft, even though Lovecraft was horrifically racist and Morton was a member of the NAACP. He was also an anarchist.

In a review of Letters to James F. Morton, a collection of letters by H. P. Lovecraft, Randy Stafford quotes the Morton essay that brought Morton to Lovecraft’s attention:
Lovecraft needs to serve a long and humble apprenticeship before he will become qualified to sit in the master’s seat and to thunder forth ex cathedra judgements.
And they were friends after that. Morton clearly had no qualms about pointing out when ex cathedra judgements were off the mark, so he had a reply to R.L.H.

Chocolate Polenta Pudding Cake

Chocolate polenta pudding cake
A few years ago, a friend showed me his copy of Lynne Rossetto Kaspar’s book The Italian Country Table as a possible inspiration for some cooking. At the time, he lived in an apartment with a very small kitchen, so he came over one day to “borrow” my kitchen, just to make something. We made an entire meal from this cookbook, and later I went and got my own copy.

I forget which recipes we made other than chocolate polenta pudding cake, and this is the one that I’ve made many times since. I’ve been making it for my mother-in-law’s birthday for several years now, since it brings together many things she likes (including chocolate). It’s a bit of a bear of a recipe, since it starts with making sweet polenta, but the result is an incredible chocolate cake with a creamy interior.

Well, They Are Phony Doctors

There's an old joke.
A woman gets introduced to another guest at a party, and since he was referred to as Dr. Jones, she says, "I have a question about this pain in my shoulder."

"I'm sorry," he says, "I'm not that kind of doctor. I'm a Ph.D., a doctor of philosophy."

"And what kind of disease is philosophy?"

Esperanto at the World’s Fair

Ici on parle l'Espéranto?
The 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, is known for a number of things, including an early demonstration of sound film.[1] According to an article in the July 5, 1899 Washington Times, is should also be known as one of the early demonstrations of Esperanto.

In 1899, Esperanto had reached the ripe old age of 12. The first Universala Kongreso was still six years away. And while the Times got a lot of facts about Esperanto wrong, the rather long article devoted to it was on the whole positive. Among all the entertainment of the fair, it seemed that some wanted to get some important work done.
